With the beginning of August comes the end of the 2024 NCR Voyix summer internship cycle. In May, we welcomed 105 interns, predominantly juniors and seniors from colleges and universities all over the country, into roles across the company, from HR to Software Engineering to Operations and more. Over the course of the summer, each intern was onboarded into their individual team and took on important functional roles; in addition, they each worked on a specialized group project, focused on a problem or opportunity, which they presented at the Intern Expo on July 31. Internships and University Recruitment practices at NCR Voyix have been highly ranked by a variety of organizations, including the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and WayUp, as well as by the University of Georgia and Georgia State University, among others. For many interns, their summer at NCR Voyix can be the first step on a path to full-time employment at the company; for others, the experience that they gain opens doors at other noteworthy employers.
As this class of interns prepares to return to their studies, we caught up with some of them to ask about what they learned and accomplished over the last ten weeks.
For many interns, including Asfa Karim, who joined the Retail Marketing team, this role was their first time working an office job, a challenge that required developing vital new skills. “Initially, we struggled with communication and clarity on who was responsible for what [in the group project],” said Asfa. “However, we managed to overcome this by implementing effective communication strategies and fostering a collaborative team environment, which significantly improved our productivity and project outcomes.” Other interns, like Arya Telang in IT, took on skills to better prepare them for their studies and beyond. “My project was a challenge in itself since I had never coded before—but I resolved it and prepared for the future by doing multiple LinkedIn Learnings, [so] when I take my first coding class in the fall, I'll be better prepared,” she shared. Another theme that came up among multiple interns was the importance of adaptability. On the Hospitality team, Laila Hanson shared that her experience has helped her professional ambitions evolve. “My experience has really shown me that I am open to a lot of different jobs and not just what I am studying in school,” she said, adding that this experience helped her “learn to get comfortable in the uncomfortable.”
One of the best opportunities that an internship offers is the chance to build your professional network. Matthew Lescota, who spent the summer “learning a completely new SaaS ecosystem” on the IT team counts among the benefits of his role the connections he’s been able to make, and Macie Smith, an intern on the Digital Banking team took advantage of her time at a large company by embracing the corporate culture. “By actively seeking mentorship and participating in company-wide events, I developed a deeper appreciation for organizational dynamics and fostered meaningful connections,” Macie said. Caroline Kern, on the Operations team, shared her sentiment. “Be open-minded and always on the lookout to make new connections!” she echoed.
Many of the interns shared that they connected well with their teams and found the support they needed to learn and grow. Mehar Nemani, who joined the Legal team for the summer, shared that his time at NCR Voyix has “been significant in shaping my view on corporate management and corporate structure,” and that the support his team has provided has been essential. “People are more willing to help than you’d think,” he said. Shana Sah, who worked in Human Resources, shares that she “learned the impact that genuine networking can have on you and your job. Forming connections with everyone at the company—be it my team, my manager, or my fellow interns—has been an amazing experience this summer.”
Although people joke about interns doing grunt work like getting coffee or collating endless stacks of paper, interns at NCR Voyix contribute to some of the industry’s most relevant challenges. For Zexuan Wei, who worked on Digital Banking, the focus of the summer was incorporating AI technology into the banking world. Nikhil Dasari on the Operations team tackled “forecast efficiency for [SMBs],” a task that he says "has made me realize that this is something I want to pursue and am excited for in the future.”
Josh Samuel, an intern on the UX team found that his tenure this summer helped shape and validate his career path. “My internship at NCR Voyix has affirmed that there is space for me to pursue both design and development,” he said. “You may think that you know exactly what kind of project you want to work on, but don't be afraid to try new things. You may find a new sector of your career field that you're interested in pursuing!”
As they wrap up their projects and move toward their next steps, the interns are poised to offer valuable advice to future intern classes. On the Brand team, Ariana Kohl threw herself into the fast-paced world of marketing; her advice for future interns is centered on time-management and efficiency. “Organize your calendar from the jump,” she advised, “and be sure to take notes in meetings and 1:1s when you get feedback from other employees...Don’t try to remember all of it, it will not work.” Brett Bennet, who worked with the Legal team, is grateful for the clarity that he gained this summer. “If you want to make connections to help kickstart your career and learn new technical skills that will improve your marketability, then NCR Voyix is the perfect internship for you,” he says. Shreya Alladi, an intern in HR, encourages future interns to feel confident. “Don't be afraid to really sell yourself! Hype up your accomplishments and strengths. You know your own worth more than anyone else. Everyone at NCR Voyix is incredibly supportive and wants you to become the best version of yourself!”
We’re grateful for the contributions of all the summer 2024 interns and wish them the best as they pursue their studies and future careers!
